The Rusty Doves: Although local to our area, The Rusty Doves have played extensively throughout the East Coast. An Americana mandolin and upright bass duo playing a progressive blend of swing, bluegrass, and folk, with musical selections from many genres, spanning every decade since 1900. XVSK: Working with the shorthand monicker XVSK, cellist Trevor Exter and percussionist John Kimock (son of guitarist, Steve Kimock) have a unique chemistry as musicians, wringing the depth of drums and cello. The music skirts the edges of indie rock, Americana, roots rock and improvisation that verges on jazziness. At once modern and tribal, melodic and in the groove, the rhythm section of the drums and bottom of the cello creates a foundation for Exter to weave melody and harmony– created with an occasional loop– from the high end of the cello and then solo with pizzicato and bowed solos. The surprising range of sounds created by these two artists fleshes out the lyrics and reassures the listener that this is a song based duo, not just another experimental combo exploring the depths of left field and spaciness. Thanks to Kimock’s creative, artistic drumming, the songs take on a life of their own, propelling the artists and their audience into the next mood or texture of the piece and giving the listener the impression of a full band. James McMann is a retired police officer from the New York City Police Department. He is also an acclaimed poet and author. He will be reading his original poetry inspired by the master literary works of Eugene O’Neill, Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller, and Edgar Allen Poe, as well as the paintings of Edward Hopper.

The gallery is the main room of a former Methodist church with a forty-year track record of showing the work of regional and national contemporary artists. There is uninterrupted wall space along two 47 foot walls with 16 foot ceilings. Adjustable track lighting runs parallel to each wall. The room is a multi-purpose room with classes and concerts being held in the space at various times.

The KAC will be responsible for one-way transportation and publicity, including: announcement cards, press releases, web page, email blasts, and Facebook entries. Reception with refreshments provided. All artwork is insured while on premises.

35% of any sale goes to the KAC.

The KAC exhibition committee is comprised of working artists, art and museum professionals and KAC staff who select and schedule exhibitions.

The committee convenes for the selection process approx. 1x per year.

The Kirkland Art Center will host two accomplished artists from Central and Western New York in an exhibit titled, “Natural Histories.” Artists Rose Mackiewicz of Jefferson and Linda Parlato of Buffalo were selected by the KAC Exhibition Committee to exhibit their work in the main gallery from January 15 to February 25.

Mackiewicz will be showing two collections of mixed-media paintings on panels. The first incorporates natural and manmade images but veils them under layers of encaustic. The second is more abstract, made by tearing down old paintings, taking off layers of painted canvas and incorporating them into new pieces.  Those pieces are then repainted, scraping down and sometimes adding elements, in a collage-like process. According to Mackiewicz, “It’s a recycling of old ideas into new ones but keeping something of the past that was good.”

Parlato’s water-media paintings are images drawn in charcoal, of seemingly unrelated subjects, but those that have had a profound impact on the artist. Animals, games, people, obstacles, bones – images representing both the temporal and the eternal. As Parlato explains, “I spend many hours walking in the woods with my dogs.  As we hike the miles of state forest I maintained for 20 years and the nearby Zoar Valley I catalogue many visual treasures.  Back in my studio I recall images of this time of renewal; I begin by drawing with vine charcoal on paper and then add many veils of subtle color.  This quality has been strongly influenced by the sometimes misty, filtered light of the forest.”

The Opening Reception for KAC members is Sunday, January 15 from 3-5 PM. Gallery hours are Monday to Friday from 10:00AM to 4:30PM, with extended evening hours on Thursday until 7:00PM or by appointment. Rotary Clubs and other civic groups are encouraged to contact the KAC to schedule a meeting in the main gallery.

The KAC ROADHOUSE returns with a special holiday show – An Evening with FLOODWOOD on Dec. 16th – featuring Al Schnier and Vinnie Amico from premier jam band, moe.

FLOODWOOD is a progressive string band made up of some of Central New York’s greatest musicians. Not only does it include members of the internationally known moe., but other locally known bluegrass artists Jason Barady, Nick Piccininni, and Zachary Fleitz.

The ROADHOUSE series is more of an open floor setup allowing for dancing. Doors will open at 7:30pm and the band will begin promptly at 8pm. There will be beer and wine provided through a cash bar from our good friends at Nola’s.
